What is a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) Architecture (Mixtral 8x7B) and how do Router Gates work?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain sparse MoE architectures, expert sub-networks, Router (Gating) networks, and active parameter efficiency.
Standard "dense" LLMs activate 100% of their parameters for every single token generated. A Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model (e.g. Mixtral 8x7B, DeepSeek-V3) achieves higher capability while using a fraction of active compute per token.
Architecture Mechanics:
1
Replaces dense Feed-Forward Network (FFN) layers with multiple specialized Expert Sub-Networks (e.g. 8 experts).
2
Router Gating Network: Computes logit probabilities for each token and routes the token to only the Top-K best experts (e.g. Top-2 experts).
Active vs Total Parameters:
•
Mixtral 8x7B has 47 Billion total parameters, but activates only 13 Billion parameters per token, running at 13B model speeds with 47B capabilities!
Code Implementation Example
typescript
// Conceptual Router Gate token routing
function routeTokenToExperts(tokenEmbedding: number[], expertWeights: number[][]): number[] {
// 1. Calculate router scores: softmax(token * expertWeights)
const scores = expertWeights.map(w => dotProduct(tokenEmbedding, w));
const probabilities = softmax(scores);
// 2. Select top-2 expert indices with highest probability
const top2Experts = getTopKIndices(probabilities, 2);
return top2Experts; // e.g. [Expert #2, Expert #6]
}💡Router gate top-2 expert selection concept in MoE models.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
MoE models route each token to a subset of expert sub-networks using router gates, giving large model quality at low active compute cost.
