How do Contrastive Language-Image Pre-Training (CLIP) multimodal embeddings connect images and text?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain joint dual-encoder vision-language architectures, shared vector spaces, and zero-shot image classification.

CLIP (Contrastive Language-Image Pre-Training) is a breakthrough multimodal architecture developed by OpenAI that projects images and text descriptions into the same shared embedding space.

Dual-Encoder Architecture:

•
Text Encoder: Converts text sentences into vector space.
•
Image Encoder (ViT): Converts image pixels into vector space.

Joint Training:

Trained on hundreds of millions of (Image, Text) pairs using contrastive loss, maximizing cosine similarity for matching pairs while minimizing similarity for mismatched pairs. Enables searching images using text queries directly!

Code Implementation Example

typescript
// Searching image vectors using a text embedding
const textQueryVector = await embedClipText("a red sports car parked by the ocean");

// Query vector DB containing pre-computed CLIP image embeddings
const matchingImages = await vectorStore.query({
  vector: textQueryVector,
  topK: 3
});
💡Querying CLIP image embeddings using text query vectors.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

CLIP projects image pixels and text sentences into a unified vector space, enabling text-to-image similarity search.
