How do RingAttention and State Space Models (Mamba) handle 1,000,000+ token context windows?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain RingAttention sequence parallelism across GPU rings and Mamba State Space Models (SSM) linear $O(N)$ attention.
Standard Attention scales quadratically $O(N^2)$ in memory and compute. Scaling context beyond 100,000 tokens requires fundamental algorithmic breakthroughs:
1. RingAttention:
Distributes sequence attention computation across a ring of GPUs. Each GPU holds a chunk of the sequence, passing Key and Value tensors around the GPU ring in parallel with block attention computation. Allows scaling context length proportional to GPU count (e.g. 1M+ tokens across 8 GPUs)!
2. State Space Models (Mamba Architecture):
Replaces Attention entirely with Selective State Space Models (SSMs). Processes sequences in linear $O(N)$ time with constant $O(1)$ inference memory per step!
Code Implementation Example
// Linear O(N) SSM complexity vs Quadratic O(N^2) Attention complexity
function compareComputeFlops(seqLen: number) {
const quadraticAttention = Math.pow(seqLen, 2);
const linearMamba = seqLen * 128;
return { seqLen, quadraticAttention, linearMamba };
}
console.log(compareComputeFlops(1000000));
// Attention: 1,000,000,000,000 FLOPs vs Mamba: 128,000,000 FLOPs!RingAttention distributes sequence attention across a GPU ring; Mamba SSMs replace Attention to run contexts in linear O(N) time.
