How do COOP (Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy) and COEP headers impact popup-based OAuth authentication flows?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy (COOP), Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy (COEP), window.opener isolation, and OAuth popup resolution.

Many web applications open OAuth login flows inside a browser popup window ('window.open('/auth/google')'), communicating completion via 'window.opener.postMessage()'.

The COOP Security Conflict:

Setting security header 'Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy: same-origin' isolates the popup window into a separate browsing context, severing 'window.opener' (setting 'window.opener = null'). This causes popup OAuth completion messages to fail!

Resolution Strategy:

Set 'Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy: same-origin-allow-popups' on the main application. This retains 'window.opener' relationships with popups while protecting against cross-origin window hijacking!

Code Implementation Example

typescript
// Express security headers resolving COOP OAuth popup communication
app.use((req, res, next) => {
  // Retains window.opener context for OAuth popup authorization flows
  res.setHeader('Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy', 'same-origin-allow-popups');
  res.setHeader('Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy', 'same-origin');
  next();
});
💡Configuring COOP header same-origin-allow-popups to preserve OAuth popup communication.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Set Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy to same-origin-allow-popups to allow OAuth popup windows to communicate via window.opener.
