How do Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP / zk-SNARKs) enable Privacy-Preserving Authentication?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP), zk-SNARKs, proving identity claims without disclosing underlying identity data, and anonymous credentials.

Traditional authentication forces users to disclose sensitive personal data (e.g. transmitting full birth date, driver's license number, or SSN to prove age). Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) enable Privacy-Preserving Authentication.

Mathematical Concept:

A Prover can mathematically prove to a Verifier that a statement is true without revealing any information beyond the statement's validity.

Real-World Use Case (zk-SNARK Anonymous Credentials):

•
User Claim: "I am over 21 years old and a verified resident of New York".
•
ZKP Execution: The user's device generates a cryptographic proof (zk-SNARK) computed over an encrypted government ID certificate.
•
Verification: The server verifies the zk-SNARK proof. The server gains 100% mathematical assurance that the claim is true, without ever seeing the user's name, exact birth date, or street address!

Code Implementation Example

typescript
// Conceptual zk-SNARK proof verification for age verification
interface ZkProofPayload {
  pi_a: string[];
  pi_b: string[][];
  pi_c: string[];
  publicSignals: string[]; // [ "isOver21 == 1" ]
}

async function verifyAnonymousAgeProof(proof: ZkProofPayload, verificationKey: object): Promise<boolean> {
  // SnarkJS zero-knowledge proof verification
  const isValid = await snarkjs.groth16.verify(verificationKey, proof.publicSignals, proof);
  return isValid; // True proof without knowing exact birth date!
}
💡Verifying zero-knowledge proof (zk-SNARK) age claim without disclosing birth date.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Zero-Knowledge Proofs (zk-SNARKs) allow users to prove identity claims (e.g. age > 21) without disclosing raw identity data.
