Beginner LevelCloud Computing (AWS/GCP/Azure)
What is AWS Fargate and how does it run serverless containers without managing EC2 instances?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain AWS Fargate serverless compute engine for ECS/EKS, instance management removal, CPU/RAM sizing, and cost model.
AWS Fargate is a serverless compute engine for containers that works with both Amazon ECS and Amazon EKS.
How Fargate Operates:
•
No EC2 Management: Eliminates the operational overhead of provisioning, patching, scaling, and managing host EC2 virtual machines.
•
Container-Level Allocation: You specify CPU and Memory requirements at the container Task/Pod level (e.g. '0.5 vCPU, 1 GB RAM').
•
Pay Per Second: AWS automatically provisions isolated microVM execution environments for each task, billing only for CPU and memory consumed per second!

resource "aws_ecs_task_definition" "app" {
family = "my-app"
network_mode = "awsvpc"
requires_compatibilities = ["FARGATE"]
cpu = "256" # 0.25 vCPU
memory = "512" # 512 MB RAM
container_definitions = jsonencode([
{
name = "web"
image = "nginx:alpine"
}
])
}💡Terraform ECS task definition targeting AWS Fargate serverless compute.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
AWS Fargate runs containers on demand without requiring server management or EC2 cluster capacity planning.
