How do Route 53 Health Checks execute multi-region active-passive DNS failover?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Route 53 health check probes, evaluation thresholds, active-passive DNS record routing, and automated regional failover.

Architecting multi-region disaster recovery requires automated DNS failover when a primary region suffers an outage.

How Route 53 Active-Passive Failover Works:

1
Health Check Probes: Route 53 health checkers continuously monitor the primary region ALB/endpoint (sending HTTP requests every 10 or 30 seconds).
2
Failure Threshold: If pings fail consecutive times (e.g. 3 consecutive failures), the health check flips to UNHEALTHY.
3
Automatic DNS Update: Route 53 automatically updates DNS resolution, directing all new user DNS queries away from Primary to the Secondary Standby Region!

Code Implementation Example

hcl
# Route 53 Health Check probing Primary Region endpoint
resource "aws_route53_health_check" "primary" {
  fqdn              = "us-east-alb.company.com"
  port              = 443
  type              = "HTTPS"
  resource_path     = "/healthz"
  failure_threshold = "3"
  request_interval  = "10"
}
💡Terraform Route 53 health check probing primary application endpoint.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Route 53 Health Checks monitor endpoint availability, automatically switching DNS records to secondary standby regions upon failure.
