Compare Amazon SQS Message Queues vs Amazon SNS Pub/Sub.
❓ Interview Prompt: Compare Amazon SQS (message queuing, polling, decoupling) vs Amazon SNS (fan-out notifications, pub/sub).
Amazon SQS and Amazon SNS decouple asynchronous microservices, but use different communication patterns:
1. Amazon SQS (Simple Queue Service - Point-to-Point Queue):
•
Pattern: Message Queuing (Pull / Polling model).
•
Behavior: A single message is processed by exactly one consumer worker at a time.
•
Use Case: Decoupling heavy background worker tasks (e.g. video processing jobs, order fulfillment queues).
2. Amazon SNS (Simple Notification Service - Pub/Sub Fan-Out):
•
Pattern: Publish/Subscribe (Push model).
•
Behavior: A publisher sends a message to an SNS Topic, which immediately fans out and pushes identical message copies to multiple subscribers (Lambda, SQS queues, HTTP webhooks, Email, SMS).
SNS + SQS Fan-Out Architecture:
Publishing an event to SNS which fans out copies to multiple SQS queues for parallel worker processing.
Code Implementation Example
typescript
// SNS Fan-Out Pattern Topology
interface SnsFanOutTopology {
publisher: 'Order Service publishes order_created event to SNS Topic';
subscribers: [
'SQS Queue 1 -> Billing Service Worker',
'SQS Queue 2 -> Inventory Service Worker',
'Lambda Function -> Analytics Event Processor'
]
}💡SNS Pub/Sub fan-out architecture pushing to multiple SQS queues.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
SQS uses a pull queue for 1-to-1 worker processing; SNS uses a push topic for 1-to-many fan-out notifications.
