How does CSS Anchor Positioning work with the Popover API?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain anchor-name, position-anchor, and CSS-based tooltip/popover positioning.

CSS Anchor Positioning allows elements to be positioned relative to another element (the anchor) instead of relative to a positioned ancestor or the viewport:

Setup:

1
Anchor element: anchor-name: --my-anchor;
2
Positioned element: position-anchor: --my-anchor; plus position: absolute;
3
Use anchor() function to reference the anchor's edges: top: anchor(bottom);

Combined with Popover API:

The HTML popover attribute creates light-dismiss popup elements. CSS Anchor Positioning places them precisely relative to their trigger button.

Code Implementation Example

css
/* The trigger button is the anchor */
.trigger {
  anchor-name: --tooltip-anchor;
}

/* Tooltip positioned below the anchor */
.tooltip {
  position: absolute;
  position-anchor: --tooltip-anchor;
  top: anchor(bottom);
  left: anchor(center);
  translate: -50% 8px;
}
💡CSS anchor positioning for tooltip placement.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

CSS Anchor Positioning eliminates JavaScript-based tooltip and popover positioning libraries.
