Intermediate LevelCSS & Modern Layouts
What are CSS Cascade Layers (@layer) and how do they control specificity conflicts?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain @layer declaration, ordering, and how layers solve specificity wars with third-party CSS.
Cascade Layers (@layer) give authors explicit control over cascade priority independent of selector specificity:
The Problem:
Third-party CSS libraries (Bootstrap, component libraries) often use high-specificity selectors that are difficult to override without !important.
The Solution:
Declare layer order explicitly. Rules in later-declared layers override earlier layers regardless of specificity:
1
@layer reset, base, components, utilities; — declares priority order.2
Rules in
utilities override components even if components have higher specificity.3
Un-layered styles always override all layers.
Code Implementation Example
css
/* Declare layer priority order */
@layer reset, base, components, utilities;
@layer reset {
* { margin: 0; padding: 0; box-sizing: border-box; }
}
@layer base {
body { font-family: 'Inter', sans-serif; color: #3d2c2e; }
}
@layer components {
.btn { padding: 12px 24px; border-radius: 8px; }
}
@layer utilities {
.text-center { text-align: center; }
.mt-4 { margin-top: 1rem; }
}💡Cascade layers with explicit priority ordering.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
@layer solves specificity wars by letting layer order determine priority instead of selector specificity.
