Beginner LevelDocker & Deployment
What is Docker BuildKit (DOCKER_BUILDKIT=1) and why is it faster?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Docker BuildKit features: parallel stage execution, secret mounts, inline cache, and remote cache backends.
Docker BuildKit is a next-generation image build engine that replaced the legacy builder in Docker 23.0+. It is now the default builder.
Key BuildKit Improvements:
1
Parallel Stage Execution: Independent multi-stage build stages execute concurrently — a
deps and test stage can run in parallel instead of sequentially.2
Secret Mounts (
RUN --mount=type=secret): Expose secrets to RUN commands without baking them into any layer. The secret is available only during that instruction's execution.3
SSH Agent Forwarding (
RUN --mount=type=ssh): Forward SSH keys for private git dependencies without copying key files into the build context.4
Inline Cache (
--cache-to/--cache-from): Push and pull layer caches to/from a registry — enables cache sharing across CI machines.5
Improved Output: Progress output with timing per stage, and better error messages.
6
`.dockerignore` 2.0: Support for complex glob patterns and per-stage ignoring.
Code Implementation Example
dockerfile
# syntax=docker/dockerfile:1.5
FROM node:20-alpine AS deps
WORKDIR /app
COPY package*.json ./
RUN npm ci
# BuildKit: mount NPM token secret — never appears in image layers!
FROM deps AS private-deps
RUN --mount=type=secret,id=npm_token \
NPM_TOKEN=$(cat /run/secrets/npm_token) npm ci
# BuildKit: parallel stages (deps and test run concurrently)
FROM deps AS test
COPY . .
RUN npm test
FROM deps AS build
COPY --from=test /app/coverage ./coverage
RUN npm run build💡BuildKit syntax=docker/dockerfile:1.5 enables secret mounts, parallel stages, and SSH forwarding.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
BuildKit enables parallel stage execution, secret mounts (zero layer leakage), and registry-based cache sharing — significantly faster CI/CD builds.
