How does Knative Serving achieve scale-to-zero pod autoscaling (KPA)?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Knative Serving architecture — Revisions, Routes, Activator, Autoscaler (KPA), and cold start latency management for serverless workloads.

Knative Serving brings serverless semantics to Kubernetes — applications scale from 0 to N replicas based on request traffic, with automatic revision management.

Core Knative Objects:

•
Service: Top-level resource managing routing and revisions.
•
Revision: An immutable snapshot of code + config at a point in time. Every update creates a new Revision.
•
Route: Traffic routing rules — can split between multiple Revisions for A/B testing.

Scale-to-Zero Architecture:

The KPA (Knative Pod Autoscaler) implements two components:

1
Activator: When a Knative Service is scaled to zero, all traffic is redirected to the Activator proxy. The Activator buffers incoming requests and signals the Autoscaler to scale up.
2
Autoscaler (KPA): Monitors concurrency (requests in-flight per pod). When concurrency exceeds target, scales up. When all pods are idle, scales to zero after a configurable window.

Cold Start Problem:

When scaled to zero, the first request is delayed by pod startup time (typically 1–5 seconds for JVM apps, <1s for compiled Go/Node apps). Mitigations:

•
`minScale: 1`: Keep at least 1 warm pod — eliminates cold starts but costs money.
•
Distroless images: Faster startup = shorter cold start.
•
Predictive scaling: Keep warm pods during predicted traffic hours.

Code Implementation Example

yaml
# Knative Service with scale-to-zero and traffic splitting
apiVersion: serving.knative.dev/v1
kind: Service
metadata:
  name: api
spec:
  template:
    metadata:
      annotations:
        # KPA: target 10 concurrent requests per pod
        autoscaling.knative.dev/target: "10"

        # Scale to zero after 60s of no traffic
        autoscaling.knative.dev/scale-to-zero-grace-period: "60s"

        # Keep minimum 1 pod warm (eliminates cold starts)
        autoscaling.knative.dev/min-scale: "1"

        # Maximum 100 pods regardless of traffic
        autoscaling.knative.dev/max-scale: "100"

        # Initial scale: start with 3 pods on first request
        autoscaling.knative.dev/initial-scale: "3"
    spec:
      containers:
        - image: myapp:v2.0.0
          resources:
            limits:
              memory: 512Mi
              cpu: "1"

  # Traffic splitting: 90% to current, 10% to previous revision
  traffic:
    - latestRevision: true
      percent: 90
    - revisionName: api-00002 # previous revision
      percent: 10
💡Knative Service: scale-to-zero with 60s grace, minimum 1 warm pod, target 10 concurrent requests per pod, 90/10 traffic split.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Knative KPA scales to zero via Activator buffering — cold starts are the trade-off. Use minScale:1 for latency-critical services. Immutable Revisions enable instant canary rollback.
