What is the difference between EXPOSE in a Dockerfile and -p (port mapping) in docker run?

❓ Interview Prompt: Clarify the roles of EXPOSE (documentation), -p (host port mapping), and -P (random port publish) when running containers.

EXPOSE and -p are commonly confused — they serve entirely different purposes:

EXPOSE (Dockerfile — Documentation Only):

•
Does NOT publish or open any ports.
•
Acts as documentation stating which ports the containerized application listens on.
•
Helps developers and orchestration tools understand the container's network interface.
•
Enables -P (capital P) to know which ports to randomly map.

-p host_port:container_port (docker run — Actual Publishing):

•
Actually publishes a container port to the host machine.
•
Creates a NAT rule mapping host_port → container_port.
•
Without -p, the container is unreachable from outside its Docker network.

-P (Publish All Exposed Ports Randomly):

•
Publishes all ports declared with EXPOSE to random available host ports.
•
Useful for testing multiple instances without port conflicts.

Code Implementation Example

bash
# Dockerfile has: EXPOSE 3000
# This alone does NOT make port 3000 accessible from host!

# Must use -p to publish explicitly:
docker run -p 3000:3000 myapp # host:3000 → container:3000
docker run -p 8080:3000 myapp # host:8080 → container:3000 (port remapping)
docker run -p 127.0.0.1:3000:3000 myapp # bind to localhost only (security!)

# -P publishes EXPOSE'd ports to random host ports
docker run -P myapp
docker port myapp # shows the random host port assignment
# 3000/tcp -> 0.0.0.0:49153

# Without -p or -P: container runs but is unreachable from host
docker run myapp # container:3000 is accessible only inside Docker network
💡EXPOSE documents ports; -p maps them to the host. Without -p, the container is network-isolated.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

EXPOSE is documentation only. Use -p host:container to actually publish a port. For security, bind to 127.0.0.1 unless the port must be globally accessible.
