Senior LevelExpress JS
How do you architect enterprise OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC) authentication in Express using Keycloak?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code Flow with PKCE, OpenID Connect (OIDC) ID Tokens vs Access Tokens, JWKS public key verification, and Keycloak.
Enterprise applications rely on centralized Identity Providers (Keycloak, Auth0, Okta) implementing OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC).
Architecture Mechanics:
1
Authorization Code Flow with PKCE: Express redirects the user to the Identity Provider. Upon login, IdP redirects back with an authorization code.
2
Token Exchange: Express exchanges the code for ID Tokens and Access Tokens.
3
JWKS Signature Verification: Express verifies Access Tokens by fetching the IdP's public key set (JWKS) over HTTPS and verifying signatures locally without calling the IdP on every request!
Code Implementation Example
javascript
import express from 'express';
import jwksClient from 'jwks-rsa';
import jwt from 'jsonwebtoken';
const client = jwksClient({
jwksUri: 'https://keycloak.company.com/realms/master/protocol/openid-connect/certs'
});
function getKey(header, callback) {
client.getSigningKey(header.kid, (err, key) => {
callback(null, key.getPublicKey());
});
}
// Verify OIDC Access Token against Keycloak JWKS public keys!
export const verifyOidcToken = (req, res, next) => {
const token = req.headers.authorization?.split(' ')[1];
jwt.verify(token, getKey, { algorithms: ['RS256'] }, (err, decoded) => {
if (err) return res.status(401).json({ error: 'OIDC token verification failed' });
req.user = decoded;
next();
});
};💡Verifying OIDC JWT signatures using Keycloak JWKS public key set.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
Use OIDC Authorization Code Flow with PKCE and verify Access Tokens locally against the Identity Provider's JWKS public key set.
