What is the difference between git init and git clone?
❓ Interview Prompt: Compare initializing a brand new empty Git repository locally versus cloning a remote repository.
Git repository setup starts with either initializing a new local project or cloning an existing remote repository:
1. 'git init':
•
Initializes a brand new, empty Git repository in your current working directory.
•
Creates a hidden '.git/' directory containing repository configuration, object database, and reference pointers.
•
Used when starting a project from scratch on your local disk before linking to remote hosts.
2. 'git clone <url>':
•
Downloads an existing remote repository (from GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket) onto your local machine.
•
Automatically initializes a local '.git/' repository, sets up a remote reference named 'origin', and checks out the default branch ('main' or 'master').
Code Implementation Example
bash
# Option A: Initialize a brand new local repository
mkdir my-new-project
cd my-new-project
git init
# Option B: Clone an existing remote repository
git clone https://github.com/user/repository.git
cd repository💡Initializing a new Git repository vs cloning a remote repository.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
Use git init to create a new empty repository locally; use git clone to download an existing remote repository.
