How does the CSS Object Model (CSSOM) interact with HTML parser execution?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain CSSOM tree construction, script execution blocking while CSS is pending, and layout calculations.

Before the browser can render content, it must construct both the DOM tree (from HTML) and the CSSOM tree (from CSS stylesheets).

Parser Blocking Interaction:

If a synchronous '<script>' is encountered while external CSS stylesheets are still downloading, the browser pauses script execution until the CSSOM is completely built! This ensures scripts querying layout properties (like 'element.offsetHeight') receive accurate calculated styles.

Code Implementation Example

html
<head>
  <!-- CSSOM must finish building before synchronous script below can execute -->
  <link rel="stylesheet" href="theme.css">
  <script src="app.js"></script>
</head>
💡CSSOM construction blocking synchronous script execution.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Browsers pause synchronous script execution until pending CSSOM trees finish building to prevent inaccurate layout queries.
