How do you diagnose and resolve detached DOM node memory leaks in Chrome DevTools?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain detached DOM nodes, JavaScript garbage collection retention paths, memory leak diagnosis, and cleanup listeners.

A Detached DOM Node is a node that has been removed from the visible document tree ('parentElement.removeChild(node)'), but is still kept alive in RAM because a JavaScript variable or event listener retains a reference to it!

Diagnosis & Resolution:

1
Take a Heap Snapshot in Chrome DevTools Memory tab and search for 'Detached HTMLDivElement'.
2
Inspect the Retainers tree to find the closure or array reference.
3
Nullify references ('nodeRef = null') when removing elements from the DOM.

Code Implementation Example

javascript
let detachedRef = document.getElementById('leaky-node');
document.body.removeChild(detachedRef);

// ❌ LEAK: detachedRef still retains memory!
// ✅ FIX: Nullify reference to allow V8 Garbage Collector cleanup:
detachedRef = null;
💡Resolving detached DOM node memory leak by nullifying references.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Nullify JavaScript variables and event listeners referencing removed DOM nodes to prevent detached DOM memory leaks.
