What is the V8 engine compilation pipeline (Ignition, TurboFan, hidden classes)?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain V8 bytecode interpretation with Ignition, JIT optimization with TurboFan, hidden classes, and inline caches.

The V8 engine executes JavaScript via a multi-stage compilation pipeline:

1. Ignition (Interpreter):

Parses JS code into an AST and compiles it to lightweight Bytecode for immediate fast startup. Tracks execution profiling metrics.

2. TurboFan (Optimizing JIT Compiler):

Hot functions (executed frequently) are passed to TurboFan, which compiles bytecode directly into Optimized Machine Code using type feedback.

3. Hidden Classes (Shapes) & Inline Caches (IC):

V8 generates internal hidden classes for objects with identical property structures. Monomorphic function calls accessing properties on matching hidden classes skip dictionary lookups using Inline Caches. Deoptimizations occur if property shapes mutate unpredictably.

Code Implementation Example

javascript
// ✅ Fast: Monomorphic IC (identical hidden class shape)
function Point(x, y) {
  this.x = x;
  this.y = y; // V8 creates hidden class C0 -> C1
}
const p1 = new Point(1, 2);
const p2 = new Point(3, 4);

// ❌ Slow: Polymorphic / Deoptimized (mutating property order)
const bad1 = {}; bad1.x = 1; bad1.y = 2;
const bad2 = {}; bad2.y = 2; bad2.x = 1; // Different hidden class order!
💡Monomorphic hidden class shapes vs polymorphic property initialization.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Initialize object properties in consistent order inside constructors to allow V8 hidden class and inline cache optimizations.
