How does Laravel manage configuration files and .env environment variables?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain .env files, DotEnv parser, config() helper vs env() helper, and production config caching (php artisan config:cache).

Laravel uses DotEnv to load environment-specific variables from a '.env' file in the root directory.

Best Practice:

•
Access '.env' values ONLY inside files within the 'config/' directory using 'env("APP_KEY")'.
•
Access settings in application code using the 'config("app.name")' helper!

Why?: Running 'php artisan config:cache' in production disables 'env()' calls outside config files for maximum speed.

Code Implementation Example

php
<?php
// In config/services.php:
return [
    'stripe' => [
        'secret' => env('STRIPE_SECRET'),
    ],
];

// In Application Code:
$stripeKey = config('services.stripe.secret');
💡Accessing environment variables via config files and config() helper.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Always access environment settings via config('file.key') in application code to support production config caching.
