How do you manage MySQL / PostgreSQL Table Partitioning with Eloquent models?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain table partitioning (RANGE, HASH, LIST), managing millions of time-series records, Eloquent partition pruning, and migration scripts.

When database tables reach tens of millions of rows (e.g. audit logs or analytics metrics), query performance degrades despite standard indexes.

Table Partitioning:

Splits a single logical table into physical sub-table partitions on disk based on a column value (e.g. 'RANGE (YEAR(created_at))').

•
Partition Pruning: Queries including 'created_at' scan ONLY the specific target partition disk file, ignoring 95% of table data!

Code Implementation Example

sql
-- Creating Range Partitioned MySQL Table for Analytics
CREATE TABLE app_events (
    id BIGINT NOT NULL,
    event_name VARCHAR(255),
    created_at DATETIME NOT NULL,
    PRIMARY KEY (id, created_at)
)
PARTITION BY RANGE (YEAR(created_at)) (
    PARTITION p2025 VALUES LESS THAN (2026),
    PARTITION p2026 VALUES LESS THAN (2027)
);
💡SQL Table Partitioning script by Range on created_at year.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Partition large time-series database tables to enable partition pruning and keep Eloquent queries fast.
