How does bulkWrite() execute ordered and unordered batch operations?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain bulkWrite(), batch operation arrays (insertOne, updateOne, deleteOne), ordered vs unordered execution modes, and network round-trips.
'bulkWrite()' executes multiple insert, update, and delete operations in a single network round-trip to the MongoDB server:
Execution Modes:
•
Ordered (default: 'ordered: true'): Operations execute sequentially. If an error occurs, execution halts immediately.
•
Unordered ('ordered: false'): Operations execute in parallel. Errors on individual items do NOT halt processing of remaining items!
Code Implementation Example
typescript
import { ProductModel } from './models/Product';
async function batchUpdateInventory(updates: Array<{ id: string; qty: number }>) {
const ops = updates.map(item => ({
updateOne: {
filter: { _id: item.id },
update: { $inc: { stock: item.qty } }
}
}));
// Unordered bulk write for maximum throughput
await ProductModel.bulkWrite(ops, { ordered: false });
}💡Executing unordered batch inventory updates via bulkWrite().
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
Use bulkWrite() with ordered: false to execute batch operations concurrently in a single network round-trip.
