What is Client-Side Field Level Encryption (CSFLE) in MongoDB?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Client-Side Field Level Encryption (CSFLE), encrypting sensitive fields before transmission, key management (KMS), and security.

Client-Side Field Level Encryption (CSFLE) encrypts specific sensitive document fields (SSNs, credit cards) on the Node.js client BEFORE sending data over the network:

Security Benefit:

The MongoDB server stores ONLY encrypted ciphertext. Even if database storage or logs are compromised, sensitive data remains unreadable without the KMS Master Key!

Code Implementation Example

typescript
import { ClientEncryption } from 'mongodb';

// CSFLE encrypts sensitive data on client before sending to MongoDB
console.log('CSFLE encrypts fields on client side prior to network transport');
💡Client-Side Field Level Encryption Architecture.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Deploy CSFLE for highly regulated PII data (SSN, Financial) so the database server never receives unencrypted plaintext.
