How does PHP OPcache and the PHP 8+ JIT (Just-In-Time) Compiler work internally?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain opcode caching in shared memory, eliminating redundant script parsing/compilation, and how JIT compiles opcode to CPU machine code.

By default, when a PHP script executes, the Zend Engine performs three CPU-intensive steps: Lexing/Tokenizing (reading raw '.php' text), Parsing (generating an Abstract Syntax Tree AST), and Compilation (converting AST into Zend Opcodes). In a high-traffic site, performing these steps on every single HTTP request wastes massive CPU resources!

1. OPcache (Shared Memory Opcode Cache):

OPcache intercepts the compiled Zend Opcodes and stores them directly in the OS Shared Memory (SHM). On subsequent requests, PHP completely skips lexing, parsing, and compilation, executing the cached opcodes from RAM instantly! This provides a 2x-5x throughput boost.

2. PHP 8.0+ JIT (Just-In-Time) Compiler:

While OPcache caches opcode, the Zend VM still has to interpret those opcodes in a C software loop. The JIT Compiler (enabled via 'opcache.jit=tracing') goes a step further: it monitors running opcodes, identifies hot numerical or CPU-bound loops, and compiles those opcodes directly into native x86/ARM CPU machine code in memory! When the loop runs again, the CPU executes the machine code directly, bypassing the Zend Virtual Machine entirely.

Code Implementation Example

; Production php.ini optimization for OPcache and PHP 8+ JIT
[opcache]
opcache.enable=1
opcache.enable_cli=1
opcache.memory_consumption=256
opcache.interned_strings_buffer=16
opcache.max_accelerated_files=20000

; In production, validate timestamps every 60s or set to 0 and flush on deploy
opcache.validate_timestamps=1
opcache.revalidate_freq=60

; Enable PHP 8.0+ Tracing JIT Compiler
opcache.jit_buffer_size=128M
opcache.jit=tracing

🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

OPcache stores compiled opcodes in shared memory to bypass parsing. PHP 8 JIT compiles hot opcodes into native machine code for CPU speedups.
