Why cannot you use Context providers or consumers inside React Server Components?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain React Server Components limitations, lack of Context support in RSC, stateless server execution, and passing props/RSC data.

React Server Components (RSC) CANNOT use Context providers or 'use(Context)':

Why Context is Unsupported in RSC:

1
Server Components execute once on the server per request and stream HTML/RSC wire payloads. They do NOT have a dynamic re-render lifecycle.
2
Context relies on client-side subscription trees that trigger component re-renders when values change.
•
Workaround: Pass data explicitly as props from Server Components down to Client Component Context Providers ('<ClientProvider data={serverData}>').

Code Implementation Example

jsx
// Server Component
import { ClientThemeProvider } from './ClientThemeProvider'; // 'use client'

export async function ServerLayout({ children }) {
  const userSettings = await db.settings.find(); // Fetch on server
  return (
    <ClientThemeProvider settings={userSettings}>
      {children}
    </ClientThemeProvider>
  );
}
💡Passing server data to a Client Context Provider wrapper.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Server Components cannot use Context; pass server data as props to Client Component Context Providers.
