How does useDeferredValue defer re-rendering of non-critical UI parts?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain `useDeferredValue`, lagging non-critical UI trees, comparison with debouncing/throttling, and Concurrent React rendering.
'useDeferredValue' receives a value and returns a deferred copy of that value that "lags behind" during heavy updates:
'useDeferredValue' vs Debouncing:
•
Debouncing: Waits a fixed time delay (e.g. 300ms) regardless of machine speed.
•
'useDeferredValue': Starts rendering immediately in the background, rendering as fast as the user's hardware allows without blocking typing! If a new key is typed, React aborts the in-flight deferred render instantly.
Code Implementation Example
jsx
import { useState, useDeferredValue } from 'react';
function SearchApp({ items }) {
const [query, setQuery] = useState('');
const deferredQuery = useDeferredValue(query); // Lagged copy of query
return (
<div>
<input value={query} onChange={e => setQuery(e.target.value)} />
{/* Heavy child component uses deferred value! Keeps input typing fast! */}
<HeavySearchResults query={deferredQuery} />
</div>
);
}💡Deferring heavy search result re-renders using useDeferredValue.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
Use useDeferredValue to lag non-critical UI components without introducing fixed debounce delays.
