How do JSON Web Key Sets (JWKS) enable seamless zero-downtime JWT key rotation?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain JWKS (`/.well-known/jwks.json`), RSA public key discovery, `kid` (Key ID) header matching, and zero-downtime cryptographic key rotation.

Hardcoding public verification keys inside API gateways makes key rotation impossible without service restarts. JSON Web Key Sets (JWKS) (RFC 7517) solves this dynamically:

Zero-Downtime Key Rotation Architecture:

1
Auth Server exposes public keys at 'https://auth.example.com/.well-known/jwks.json'.
2
Every signed JWT includes a 'kid' (Key ID) header: '{ "alg": "RS256", "kid": "key_2026_v1" }'.
3
API Gateway fetches JWKS keys dynamically and caches them in memory.
4
When Auth Server rotates to 'key_2026_v2', JWKS updates. The API gateway automatically fetches the new public key matching the incoming 'kid' without dropping requests!

Code Implementation Example

json
{
  "keys": [
    {
      "kty": "RSA",
      "use": "sig",
      "alg": "RS256",
      "kid": "key_2026_v1",
      "n": "u1W3...",
      "e": "AQAB"
    }
  ]
}
💡Standard /.well-known/jwks.json public key set response payload.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Use JWKS (/.well-known/jwks.json) to enable dynamic zero-downtime cryptographic key rotation across API gateways.
