How does Ephemeral Diffie-Hellman (ECDHE) provide Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS)?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS), Ephemeral Diffie-Hellman (ECDHE), compromise of static private keys, and retroactive traffic decryption protection.
Without Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS), if an attacker records encrypted TLS traffic today and steals the server's static RSA private key 5 years later, they can retroactively decrypt all historical recorded traffic!
Perfect Forward Secrecy Solution:
Uses Ephemeral Diffie-Hellman (ECDHE) key exchange:
•
A temporary, single-use key pair is generated for every individual TLS session and discarded immediately after.
•
Even if the master server private key is stolen in the future, past recorded TLS session keys CANNOT be derived or decrypted!
Code Implementation Example

// TLS 1.3 Cipher Suite enforcing Perfect Forward Secrecy (ECDHE Key Exchange):
TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (Key Exchange: ECDHE_X25519)💡TLS 1.3 cipher suite establishing Perfect Forward Secrecy.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
Enforce Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS) using ECDHE key exchange to protect historical traffic against retroactive decryption.
