What is the State Pattern and how does it replace complex nested conditional state machines?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain the State Behavioral Pattern, state objects, delegating behavior to discrete state classes, and finite state machines.

The State Pattern allows an object to alter its behavior when its internal state changes. The object appears to change its class by delegating state-dependent logic to discrete State objects:

Benefit:

Eliminates sprawling conditional 'switch (currentState)' statements across every method in a state machine (e.g. Order Status: 'Pending -> Processing -> Shipped -> Delivered').

Code Implementation Example

typescript
interface OrderState { next(order: Order): void; }
class PendingState implements OrderState {
  next(order: Order) { order.setState(new ProcessingState()); }
}
class ProcessingState implements OrderState {
  next(order: Order) { console.log('Order already processing'); }
}
class Order {
  private state: OrderState = new PendingState();
  setState(s: OrderState) { this.state = s; }
  next() { this.state.next(this); }
}
💡Modeling finite state transitions with the State pattern.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Use the State pattern to encapsulate state-specific behavior in separate classes and eliminate bloated state machine switch statements.
