What is the Transactional Outbox Pattern and how does it guarantee event publishing consistency?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Transactional Outbox Pattern, dual-write problem, database transactions, Outbox Table, and Change Data Capture (Debezium).

The Dual-Write Problem:

If a service saves data to a database AND publishes an event to Kafka in separate operations, one can fail, leaving the system in an inconsistent state!

Transactional Outbox Pattern Solution:

1
Save business data AND an event message into an Outbox Table within the same local ACID database transaction.
2
An independent background process or CDC tool (Debezium) reads new Outbox records and publishes them reliably to Kafka, guaranteeing at-least-once event delivery!

Code Implementation Example

typescript
import { db } from './db';

export async function createOrderWithOutbox(orderData: any) {
  return await db.$transaction(async (tx) => {
    // 1. Insert Order record
    const order = await tx.order.create({ data: orderData });
    // 2. Insert Event into Outbox table in SAME local transaction!
    await tx.outbox.create({
      data: { eventType: 'ORDER_CREATED', payload: JSON.stringify(order) }
    });
  });
}
💡Inserting order record and outbox event inside a single atomic DB transaction.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Use the Transactional Outbox pattern to prevent dual-write inconsistencies when publishing events during database updates.
