What is the Doublewrite Buffer in InnoDB and how does it prevent partial page write corruption?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain InnoDB Doublewrite Buffer, OS page sizes (4KB) vs InnoDB page sizes (16KB), partial page writes, and crash prevention.

Operating system disk pages are typically 4KB, while InnoDB memory pages are 16KB. A power loss mid-write causes a Partial Page Write (corrupting 8KB of a page):

Doublewrite Buffer Solution:

1
Before writing a 16KB data page to its final data file, InnoDB writes the page sequentially to the Doublewrite Buffer on disk.
2
If a crash occurs during the final file write, InnoDB restores the intact 16KB page from the Doublewrite Buffer before replaying the Redo Log!

Code Implementation Example

sql
-- Verifying Doublewrite Buffer status in MySQL
SHOW GLOBAL STATUS LIKE 'Innodb_dblwr%';
💡Inspecting InnoDB Doublewrite Buffer status metrics.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

The Doublewrite Buffer protects InnoDB from OS partial page write corruption during power failures.
