How does Multi-Version Concurrency Control (MVCC) work in MySQL InnoDB (Undo Logs and Read Views)?
❓ Interview Prompt: Explain MVCC (Multi-Version Concurrency Control), InnoDB Read Views, Undo Log chain (`DB_TRX_ID`, `DB_ROLL_PTR`), and non-locking consistent reads.
Multi-Version Concurrency Control (MVCC) allows MySQL InnoDB to execute non-locking consistent reads where "Readers do not block Writers, and Writers do not block Readers":
InnoDB MVCC Mechanism:
1
Every row contains hidden system columns: 'DB_TRX_ID' (ID of last transaction that modified the row) and 'DB_ROLL_PTR' (pointer to its Undo Log record).
2
When a transaction mutates a row, the old version is written to the Undo Log.
3
Read transactions construct a Read View snapshot. When reading rows, InnoDB traverses the Undo Log chain to return the row version visible to that snapshot!
Code Implementation Example
sql
-- Inspecting transaction system status and Undo Log activity
SHOW ENGINE INNODB STATUS;💡Inspecting InnoDB engine status and transaction Undo Log details.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway
MVCC uses Undo Logs and Read Views so read queries execute concurrently without waiting for write locks.
