How does the Redo Log (Write-Ahead Log) guarantee crash recovery in InnoDB?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Redo Log (WAL - Write-Ahead Logging), `ib_logfile`, Log Sequence Numbers (LSN), fuzzy checkpointing, and crash recovery.

To achieve high performance, InnoDB writes dirty data pages to RAM first, deferring disk writes. Write-Ahead Logging (Redo Log) guarantees durability:

Crash Recovery Mechanism:

1
Before modifying a data page in RAM, InnoDB appends the change sequentially to the Redo Log on disk.
2
LSN (Log Sequence Number) tracks log position.
3
If the server crashes or loses power, InnoDB replays the Redo Log starting from the last Checkpoint during boot, restoring all committed changes!

Code Implementation Example

sql
-- Checking Redo Log status and LSN checkpoint position
SHOW ENGINE INNODB STATUS;
💡Inspecting Redo Log LSN checkpoint progress.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

The Redo Log provides Write-Ahead Logging to guarantee crash recovery without requiring synchronous data page disk flushes.
