How do Virtual Nodes (vnodes) solve hot-spotting in Consistent Hashing database clusters?
β Interview Prompt: Explain Virtual Nodes (vnodes) in Cassandra/DynamoDB, Hash Ring distribution, eliminating data imbalance hot-spots, and node capacity weighting.
Basic Consistent Hashing with 1 physical node per hash ring location can cause severe data imbalance (hot-spotting) if nodes are non-uniformly spaced!
Virtual Nodes (vnodes) Solution:
Instead of assigning a physical machine 1 position on the Hash Ring, assign it 128 or 256 Virtual Nodes distributed randomly across the ring:
β’
Uniform Distribution: Keys are distributed evenly across physical machines.
β’
Heterogeneous Hardware: Powerful server hardware can be assigned more virtual nodes proportional to its CPU/storage capacity!
