Why are Vue DOM updates asynchronous and when do you need to await nextTick()?

❓ Interview Prompt: Explain Vue asynchronous DOM update queue, microtask batching, and awaiting nextTick() for post-render DOM measurements.

When you mutate reactive state in Vue ('count.value++'), Vue does NOT update the DOM synchronously.

Asynchronous DOM Batching:

Vue queues state mutations in a microtask buffer and flushes all DOM updates asynchronously in a single batch. This prevents duplicate DOM repaints if state changes multiple times in the same tick.

'nextTick()':

If you mutate state and need to measure or focus a DOM element immediately afterwards, 'await nextTick()' pauses execution until Vue has finished updating the DOM!

Code Implementation Example

javascript
import { ref, nextTick } from 'vue';

const isEditing = ref(false);
const inputRef = ref(null);

async function startEditing() {
  isEditing.value = true; // State updates, but DOM is NOT updated yet!

  // Wait for Vue to render the <input> element into the DOM!
  await nextTick();

  inputRef.value?.focus(); // DOM node is now available to focus!
}
💡Awaiting nextTick() to access updated DOM nodes after state mutation.
🎯 Interview Key Takeaway

Vue updates the DOM asynchronously. Await nextTick() after state mutations to access newly updated DOM nodes.
